Clematis

It's been a good year for our clematis.

Sandy, how the hell do you get your clematis to grow? I've had one outside my front door for 10 years now. Every spring it sprouts, gathers up some steam, climbs about 10 inches, grunts and produces maybe ONE blossom (many years none) and then...peters out. No amount of watering, fertilizing or general coaxing can get it to do more. Is there some secret I don't know?--tracy thompson

How BEAUTIFUL! There's a "wild" clematis here that grows by the rivers, but the flowers are about an inch across.

I have no idea what I did to get this profusion of blooms (there are about twenty like this one!) - it is on the south (very sunny) wall of our house, in terrible clayey soil. We just planted it last year. We did have a very wet spring, so maybe that has something to do it.
